Heirloom Seeds in
Yellowhead County, Alberta
Thank you for finding us. For the Seed’s first year of operation is about to kick off and we are so excited to share our vision and passion of getting our seeds out into the community to be planted by our customers. We are even more excited for our customers to be able to share their harvests with their families, their friends and their communities. We are looking forward to working with fellow gardeners and community leaders to have seeds donated towards our common cause; feeding our communities as much nutrient dense, whole foods as possible while doing something we all have a passion for, gardening. With food security becoming a real concern for a wider range of socio economic demographics, I feel there is not a better time to start our mission. But we need you!
Gardening has always been a way to improve our lives, and those of others around us. It is a great form of exercise, stress relief and connects you to your surroundings, including other people. Sharing has always been the social norm amongst gardeners; whether we are sharing seeds, plants, advice or produce. For the Seed intends on sharing all that with our gardeners throughout the season by way of the For the Seed Gardeners Club and by connecting like minded people in their own communities.
When you order from For the Seed, you have the option of indicating if you are interested in joining forces with us in growing extra seeds, pots, rows, or plots for people that you either know in your community that could benefit from free and fresh produce - or - if you can grow extra for a food bank or pantry in your immediate area that could benefit from a produce donation, no matter how large or small. And, if you do not have the space yourself to grow extra, you have the option of indicating that you would like your gifted seeds to be donated toward larger community initiatives such as community gardens, school gardens, gardens at senior facilities or large plots dedicated towards Foodbanks. The seed we gift and share with our gardeners will vary from order to order and is to our discretion. We want to make sure everyone who is interested gets extra seeds and that all projects accepted are adequately supported.
Here is a small list of suggestions of places that would most likely be very happy to accept a donation. However, you probably know your communities best, so there may be many other opportunities to gift your harvest to those that could greatly benefit.
We encourage our gardeners to share their growing progress with us during the season as a means to encourage others to join in on this adventure. Always feel free to post your progress on our Facebook page or in our For the Seed Gardeners Club Facebook group.
I’ve curated a collection of some of my tried and true varieties that I enjoy growing and know do well in our climate. I hope to keep adding to the collection year over year. I can’t wait for you to join us in our vision in growing for as many meals as possible for those who need it in our community.

For the Seed is a small seed company that is passionate about growing quality produce for both seed and for superior vegetables for most Western Canadian climates. Whatever we have not grown, or grown enough of ourselves, we carefully source reputable seed to add to our curated collection of garden seed we make available for sale.
Something that we are even more passionate about is getting seeds into the hands of gardeners who are interested in growing extra produce for their friends, family and local foodbanks. Times are changing and food security is a growing concern amongst almost all demographics.
We invite all gardeners with a heart for their neighbors to sow extra seeds, rows, or gardens to help those who may not have access, ability or means to garden themselves. This could mean you're sowing extra for a senior you know down the street, a friend who lives in an apartment, someone that you know with a disability that cannot grow a garden for themselves, as well as your local food bank or pantry to help stock their shelves with nutrient dense options for their customers. Every little bit helps, and we are here to help you in our mission to keep our neighbors and communities fed.
That is why, with every purchase, you will have the option to have an additional package(s) of seeds that compliment your selections added to your order - for free. Or, if you aren't able or interested in becoming a For the Seed community gardener, you can choose to donate your packs to our Community Fund. We will in turn donate those packs of seeds to various community gardens in the Capital Region of Alberta.
It takes a village, and as an avid gardener, I know how much I love blessings others with the fruits of our labour.
If you are part of a community program that hosts a community garden or like project, please reach out to be added to our Community Fund list. We try and spread our seeds out far and wide.
We are so excited to see and hear the stories of our gardeners giftings this season. Let's make this happen!
